KEY POINTS

In this segment of Lifequakes, hosts Jessica Reyes and Patricia Wu discuss self-consciousness and what you can do when your discomfort with your appearance affects your social life. Dietitian Ellen Coghlan joins us with some useful tips and pieces of advice to help overcome these feelings.

Be conscious of how you talk to yourself

Coghlan says that if you find yourself uncomfortable with your appearance you must pay attention to your self-talk. We can be our own biggest critics, and sometimes we can be downright mean to ourselves for no real reason, so paying attention to your thought patterns and what leads to them is a great first step in beginning to curb that mindset.

Dilute the negativity in your life

Negative thoughts are a part of life, but if you find yourself dealing with them constantly, you have to try your best to counteract them. Coghlan recommends every time you think something bad about yourself, think about something you like about yourself in response.
