KEY POINTS

Keeping everyone connected in our busy lives can be tough, but there’s usually only one family member who always organizes reunions or shares news. This is the art of “kinkeeping.” On this “What’s Trending” segment, hosts Patricia Wu, Jessica Reyes and guest therapist Joann “JoJo” Venant break down Psychology Today’s tips to keep those family bonds strong.

Sharing the Load

The article suggests everyone should play a role in keeping connected. Even if taking initiative is one of your strengths, JoJo says it’s important to delegate based on other people’s strengths. Maybe at family meet-ups one person brings games, another person organizes food, etc. so that you’re not the only one doing everything.

New Skills, New Connections

Some family members might need help developing their “kinkeeping” skills because they don’t know where to start. These skills don’t come naturally to everyone, so JoJo encourages you to do things alongside struggling family members the first couple of times until they’re able to grow their wings.

Less Stress, More Fun

Keeping things fun and simple can help lower stress, though some family members may want to go the extra mile. In this case, JoJo says your family can plan multiple things throughout the year, so maybe you have one big trip that someone plans and smaller more relaxed gatherings down the road that other people are in charge of.
