KEY POINTS

Should doctors incorporate spirituality into their practices? An article by Health Affairs explores this question and hosts Patricia Wu, Jessica Reyes and guest therapist Dr. Jude Black break it down on “What’s Trending.”

Healthcare as a Holistic Approach

The article argues that holistic healthcare combines physical, mental, and spiritual care. Dr. Jude argues that we have to know people’s values to give proper care and this doesn’t necessarily mean their religion. By understanding the essence of the person, we’re able to better meet their needs based on the lens in which they view the world.

The Enlightenment Made Spirituality and Well-Being Grow Apart

During the Enlightenment, doctors turned away from spirituality in favor of science. However, the pandemic showed that spirituality can lead to positive health outcomes. In terms of how our beliefs affect our health, Dr. Jude says people’s basic values often guide them through the day, so by understanding their beliefs, we can better understand their purpose and provide action that helps their well-being.

What Can Doctors Do?

The study suggests doctors can acknowledge a patient’s faith, ask about religious practices, and recommend faith-based support groups. Dr. Jude says with her clients, spirituality is something they really want to incorporate into their treatment plan because it matters to them.
