Smartphones and Social Media: Distractions in School or Threats to Students’ Mental Health?
A school board has voted to ban smartphones for students in Los Angeles schools, citing the negative effects of social media on students’ mental health. The school board voted to develop a policy restricting cellphone use within 120 days with the policy planning to be in effect by January 2025. Some board members are concerned about enforcement and the impact on students with disabilities. Other districts have already banned phones or social media access. Patricia Wu discusses the school board’s decision with therapist Dr. Cortina Peters.
Education With Modern Distractions
Smartphones and social media have become an inseparable part of modern life, but their presence in the classroom can be a significant distraction for students. The constant notifications, the allure of scrolling through social feeds, and the temptation to text friends can easily derail a student’s focus from learning. This constant multitasking can impair concentration, making it harder for students to absorb information and complete assignments effectively.
