KEY POINTS

In this segment of Lifequakes, hosts Patricia Wu and Jessica Reyes discuss the turmoil a parent’s alcoholism can have on their family. Psychologist Dr. Geri-Lynn Utter-Godfrey joins the conversation to offer expert advice.

Living with an alcoholic parent

Dr. Utter-Godfrey can relate to this type of situation, as she grew up in an environment where heavy alcohol use was present. With that experience, she recommends that anyone struggling with that type of situation look into the organization Al-Anon. While Al-Anon is not the same as AA, it is part of the broad family of Alcoholics Anonymous, with Al-Anon being catered to the family and friends of those struggling with alcohol addiction.

The importance of a support network for alcoholism

It’s vital that anyone who feels unsafe, or just even concerned, due to a loved one’s drinking needs to find an outlet for support. If we do not have anyone to express our thoughts and concerns with openly then that can lead to mental issues much more difficult to address. Dr. Utter-Godfrey says that the amazing thing about resources like Al-Anon is not only are they open to people of all ages, and encourage youths to come in and share their experiences among peers, but they are accessible, as anyone can utilize it online.
