Tonya Mosley’s Discovery of Her Long-Lost Sister

Anita Wiley went missing in Detroit in 1987, this was revealed to her sister, NPR host Tonya Mosley, in 2004 by Anita’s son. Mosley did not know her nephew or her long-lost sister, let alone her disappearance years earlier. Patricia Wu and Rabbi Brandon Gaines break down the story.

A Grim Discovery

Only by a slim chance did Mosley and her nephew connect, sending Mosley on a deep dive into her sister’s disappearance. In 2020, through a DNA sample, Mosley provided, authorities were able to identify the remains of her sister that were labeled “unknown woman 1987”. While Mosley’s sister struggled with drug addiction before her disappearance, authorities believe she was murdered.

Mosley details her and her sister’s story in a ten-episode podcast called “She Has A Name.”
