KEY POINTS

In this segment of Lifequakes, hosts Patricia Wu and Jessica Reyes dive into the stress parents are under in a coaching position. Many parents forget that sports should be a source of enjoyment for their children, not an environment that only breeds competitive hostility. Dr. Cortina Peters joins us to address the stressful emotions parents can face while coaching.

Aggressive parents in youth sports

Dr. Peters says that many parents who push their children more aggressively in sports are, more often than not, trying to get the experience for themselves through their child. Some parents want to relive past experiences or make up for the lack of an experience in their own childhood.

Let your child choose their own path

When it comes to youth sports, Dr. Cortina says the first thing she would ask any child is if the sport or activity brings them joy. Every parent wants to push their kids to be well-rounded individuals but if a parent relentlessly pushes their child in a direction they don’t want to go the long-term results can’t be positive.
