KEY POINTS

In today’s segment of Psychology Behind Headlines, Patricia Wu and Jessica Reyes talks about narcissism and its impact on relationships. A recent study found that men with narcissistic traits tend to have a more negative effect on their romantic partners than women with similar traits. Why might this be?

Guest, MHTN Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dan Bober, shares his thoughts on narcissism, the different types, and how to spot the red flags that might indicate you’re in a relationship with a narcissistic person.

What is Narcissism?

Narcissism is a personality trait characterized by an exaggerated sense of self-importance, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. While forms of narcissism exist along a spectrum, it generally makes having healthy, balanced relationships very difficult.

Narcissism and Romantic Burnout

The study discussed found that certain types of narcissism can lead to romantic burnout in partners. This means feelings of disillusionment, frustration, and being trapped within the relationship.

Red Flags of Narcissism

Dr. Bober warns that if someone doesn’t treat you with respect, constantly puts their needs above yours, has difficulty seeing your perspective, or is unable to validate your feelings, these could be signs of narcissism.
