A close relationship with a parent is wonderful, but how do you set boundaries to avoid feeling smothered?
Jessica Reyes and Charlotte Lewis have seen many people struggle to maintain healthy relationships with their parents as they grow into adulthood. It can be difficult to navigate at times, but healthy family relationships are worth it.
Come from a place of understanding.
As their children grow up, some parents become more overbearing, but that might be rooted in their anxieties. Parents may feel an urge to hold onto their children more tightly as they age. This can be out of fear of being abandoned by their child, or worried about their child’s safety.
Communication is key to independence.
Having a discussion with a parent, and understanding where their worries lie, will most likely lead to the best common ground for your independence. Compassion, communication, and respect are essential to slowly address any boundaries that need to be set. While it may take some time, depending on the type of relationship, both sides will eventually understand one another more.
