The Loss of the Nation’s Oldest Man
The nation is mourning the loss of Morrie Markoff, who held the title of the oldest living man in the United States. Markoff passed away June 3, at the age of 110 at his home in Downtown Los Angeles. Jessica Reyes discusses Markoff’s passing with mental health advocate, Rabbi Brandon Gaines.
One of the Healthiest Brains Donated
Living to the age of 110 was not the only impressive aspect of Markoff, he was cognitively healthy until his passing. Markoff’s family has donated his brain to science for research through the Brain Donor Project, with the CEO describing it as one of the healthiest cognitively healthy brains ever donated from a person that age.
The Secret to a Long Life
Markoff credited his long life and cognitive function to getting regular exercise daily, eating mostly a vegetarian diet, and avoiding plastic bottled water. Markoff’s daughter said that her mother – who lived to be 103 – and father both rarely drank alcohol and were constantly learning.
