Studies from Harvard found optimists tend to live longer and healthier lives. Dr. Gwilym says that people who focus on the positive tend to enjoy reality more. He then explains that behavior is learned, so if you’re not there yet, don’t give up!

Try to challenge your beliefs about how the world works and find evidence about how bad things aren’t true all the time.

Techniques to Cultivate Optimism

Optimism can be learned by reframing negative thoughts, visualizing positive outcomes, and practicing gratitude. In terms of gratitude, start a list! Think about what you’re grateful for and put it on paper.

Another way to practice positivity by being kind to others by focusing on their positives. Dr. Gwilym gives an example of complimenting a grocery clerk by saying “this must be a really tough job, you’re doing such a good job today” instead of complaining about why it’s taking so long.
