KEY POINTS

In this segment of Lifequakes, hosts Patricia Wu and Jessica Reyes are joined by Dr. Jude Black as they explore how the dynamic between parents and children evolves as they age.

Evolving Family Dynamics

As children move out of the house, it can be surprising when they have to move back home, and that readjustment can be difficult for everyone involved. The most important thing with family stress is communication is key. When there’s any friction between loved ones it can be easy to get lost in the moment so remaining calm and clear is essential.

Make a Plan

The best thing you can do as a parent is set a course of action for you and your child. Communicate with your child about what their plans are and how they are going to achieve them. Moving back home can be a difficult action for a child, and while it can affect everyone in the home, reassure them that it is not something they are alone in or to be ashamed of.
