KEY POINTS

Are you a manipulator? Host Patricia Wu is joined by guest spiritual educator and mental health advocate Rabbi Brandon Gaines in this segment of “What’s Trending.” Together they unpack Psychology Today’s insights to how you can be pulling strings without even knowing it with covert manipulation.

The Information Gatekeeper

This person selectively shares information to control the situation. For example, someone may leave out negative reviews when trying to convince their partner to go to a restaurant they really like. Rabbi Brandon Gaines says if you give them half the information, they’re more inclined to one side without knowing the full truth.

The Approval Addict

We all like to be liked, but constantly craving approval can be a red flag. Your values can influence your choices, so building self-value through your own moral compass can make you care less about what other people think.

The Chameleon

This manipulator’s behavior changes depending on the company. Rabbi Gaines says when it comes to gaging the truth, you have to know what you think, your opinions, and your stance on topics so you have definition. “The most dangerous person in a room is somebody who can be easily manipulated just because they want to be liked.”
