KEY POINTS

Many of us turn to spiritual leaders for guidance and support, but what about their well-being? Host Jessica Reyes is joined by spiritual educator and mental health advocate Rabbi Brandon Gaines to explore this question on “What’s Trending.”

The Double-edged Sword

A Psychology Today article mentions a “calling” to ministry can be a double-edged sword because their commitment to helping others can sometimes result in neglecting themselves. Rabbi Brandon Gaines says that when the day ends, it’s important to check back in with yourself.

Overwhelming Responsibilities

Spiritual leaders often juggle many tasks, from fundraising to facility management, which can be overwhelming. To avoid burnout, it’s important to only take on what you can handle in that moment.

The Trauma Toll

Researchers from Boston University found high rates of PTSD symptoms among spiritual leaders. Rabbi Gaines says this can be because of internalizing other people’s trauma when trying to help them, which makes us human. This connects back to checking in with yourself and clearing your inside so you can be more helpful moving forward.
