Finding Light in the Darkest Situations
Inspired by her young cousin’s experience battling cancer in a drab hospital gown, 13-year-old Giuliana Demma, along with her 11-year-old sister Audrina, has sewn and donated over 1,800 cheerful gowns to hospitalized children across the US and Uganda. Giuliana, who learned to sew after her cousin’s hospitalization, creates colorful, patterned gowns to bring comfort to young patients during difficult times. Her sister Audrina contributes by sewing small pillows for patients to color. Jessica Reyes breaks down the story with Jojo Venant.
A Growing Project
The project is supported by donations and volunteers, with a local hospital linen company even cleaning the gowns for free. The sisters have also expanded their efforts by creating infusion port-friendly shirts for chemotherapy patients.
Bringing Comfort and Confidence to Who Needs it Most
The impact of their work is evident in the smiles of children like Vito DiSimone, who beamed when he received a “Cars”-themed gown during his heart surgery. Giuliana, who aspires to be a cancer surgeon, finds joy in making a difference in the lives of young patients, offering them comfort and confidence during their hospital stays.
