We just celebrated Memorial Day, a time to remember those who lost their lives in service to our country. But as Dr. Jude Black, a military spouse and veteran advocate, reminds us, there’s another silent battle many of our heroes face: suicide.
It’s heartbreaking to hear that since 9/11, more service members and veterans have died by suicide than in combat. This isn’t just a military problem, it’s a national one.
Jessica Reyes, Patricia Wu, and Dr. Jude Black believes a big part of the problem is a lack of connection and purpose after leaving the military. It’s a tough transition, and many veterans feel lost and alone.
So, what can we do?
Dr. Jude says it starts with being a good neighbor. Let’s reach out to veterans in our communities, offer a listening ear, and show them they are valued and needed. It’s also important to push for better access to mental health care for veterans, without the long wait times and stigma that often prevent them from getting help.
We can all make a difference by simply showing we care. Let’s remember that every veteran has a story and deserves our support. By coming together as a community, we can help our heroes find healing and hope.
