KEY POINTS

Do you struggle to keep up with all the new dating terms? Host Patricia Wu is joined by guest therapist Dr. Cortina Peters to break them all down in this segment of “What’s Trending.”

Ghosting

“Ghosting” is when someone suddenly cuts off all communication without explanation. Dr. Cortina explains that for some people who want to avoid communication, ghosting seems like the easy way out because they don’t have to be honest or explain themselves. While they may think they’re avoiding hurting someone’s feelings, ghosting can feel worse than a straightforward rejection.

Orbiting

“Orbiting” is when someone disappears but keeps you tethered with social media by occasionally liking or commenting on a post. Dr. Cortina says this can also mean they ghost you for a short period of time then come back, like they’re orbiting back around. This boomerang effect gives people false hope because the victim doesn’t know where the orbiter actually stands.

“Breadcrumbing” is basically someone dangling affection without really committing. This behavior can lead to confusion and frustration, as the person receiving the breadcrumbs may waste emotional energy on a relationship that will never progress.
