Have you ever tried to change someone’s mind? it’s an election year so politics come to mind. it can be hard, if not impossible, to do. In this “What’s Trending” segment, host Patricia Wu and guest therapist Dr. Jude Black break down Psychology Today’s insights on overcoming our own bias to change hearts and minds.
Understanding Confirmation Bias
Confirmation bias describes how our brains naturally gravitate towards information that reinforces our existing beliefs. Everyone has their own biases. Dr. Jude stresses that identifying what your biases are and setting them aside allows you to process new perspectives and make informed decisions on what you want to believe.
Find Common Ground
One of the most effective ways to change someone’s perspective is to find areas of agreement and build from there. Dr. Jude say being open and having meaningful conversations can change how you view the world and what your journey’s going to end up looking like.
Keep an Open Mind
Being open to new perspectives and actively seeking out information that challenges our views can broaden our understanding. By being intentional and challenging your own beliefs, you’re giving yourself space to accept a different possibility.
