Do you want to break free from shame’s grip? On this “What’s Trending” segment, hosts Jessica Reyes and Patricia Wu are joined by guest therapist Dr. Jude Black to unpack Psychology Today’s tips to get your confidence back.
Identify the Source
Finding the root cause of your shame is the first step toward overcoming it. Dr. Jude recommends giving yourself time to explore. One way you can do this is through journaling. When did you first feel shame? Write it down.
It’s also important to recognize the difference between guilt and shame because guilt is something that you’ve done, while shame is who you are.
Target and Address It
Once you pinpoint your main shame-related issues, taking action is crucial. Dr. Jude says therapy can be a great option to get an outside opinion because therapists only want to make you the best version of yourself and want nothing in return. If you don’t have a therapist, envision the hero in your life and ask what they would say about the narrative you’ve told yourself.
Don’t Give Up
Don’t be afraid to ask for help because surrounding yourself with support can be so powerful. It’s time to rebuild yourself based on who you are, what you’ve done, your passion, strengths, and abilities so that you can change that internal narrative that’s rooted in shame.
