KEY POINTS

Setting Record at Any Age

On this segment of Psychology Behind the Headlines, hosts Patricia Wu and Jessica Reyes are joined by Dr. Geri-Lynn Utter to discuss 99-year-old, Betty Brusse, who broke a world record in the 800-meter freestyle at the Masters Swimming Association of B.C. provincials, finishing in 26 minutes and 17 seconds. This adds to her collection of 10 world records.

Love of the sport

Brussel, who took up swimming at 68, swims for her health and love of the sport. Her positive attitude and achievements have inspired her teammates and coaches, who created a “Be Like Betty” award in her honor.

Brussel’s Future Plans

Brussel plans to continue competing, with her next event being the World Senior Games in October. She hopes her story encourages others to never give up on their dreams, no matter their age.
