KEY POINTS

In this segment of Lifequakes, hosts Patricia Wu and Jessica Reyes are joined by therapist Joann “JoJo” Venant to provide insight on what to do if you’re being harassed by a former partner.

A Guide to Protecting Yourself

Harassment from an ex-partner can be emotionally distressing and potentially dangerous. It’s crucial to prioritize your safety and take proactive steps to address the situation.

  1. Document Everything: Keep a detailed record of all instances of harassment, including dates, times, and descriptions of the incidents. Save any messages, emails, or voicemails as evidence.
  2. Set Clear Boundaries: Communicate firmly and clearly to your ex that their behavior is unacceptable and you want no further contact. Avoid engaging in arguments or responding to provocations.
  3. Seek Support: Confide in trusted friends, family members, or a therapist who can offer emotional support and practical advice. Consider joining a support group for survivors of harassment or domestic abuse.
  4. Take Legal Action: If the harassment persists or escalates, contact the police or a lawyer specializing in restraining orders or harassment cases. A restraining order can legally prohibit your ex from contacting you or coming near you.
  5. Block and Report: Block your ex’s phone number, email address, and social media profiles. Report any online harassment to the respective platforms.

Find The Support You Need

Remember, you are not alone, and there are resources available to help you through this challenging situation. Prioritize your safety, seek support, and take decisive action to protect yourself from further harassment.
